The central scene signed 1779/John Grahams Captain above a clasped bunch of arrows and a banner inscribed "United We Stand, Divided We Fall" over cannons, flags, and drums and another banner inscribed Honors of Warr. Also depicting a river (presumably the Hudson) with a fort and ships in a harbor, marching soldiers, and towns of West Point; Fisk Kill; E. Popus; Pocepcy (Poughkeepskie); Kinderhook; Albany; Schenedtady (sic); New Citi, Saratoga

Lot Essay

Revolutionary War Captain John Graham was placed in command of the Light Infantry Company of the First New York in the summer of 1778. In March, 1779, he was promoted to the rank of Major. This finely engraved powderhorn was likely carved during the first months of 1779, prior to his promotion.
