Lot Essay

Underneath the top, this sideboard is signed in chalk Thomas Graham, which may refer to the cabinetmaker by that name who is recorded having worked in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1809-1820. Little is known of Graham, and he may have worked previous to that date in another city. The form of this sideboard, with its kidney-shaped top and case, bellflower and shell inlay, and four legs, is in keeping with sideboards made in the Baltimore, Maryland area, and is not a form commonly associated with Charleston. Perhaps Graham was working in Maryland at some point, and either fashioned this sideboard there, or took with him to Charleston a knowledge of the form.
