Lot Essay

John Wesley Paradise, an engraver and portrait painter (1809-1862), was the son of John Paradise (1783-1833), one of the founders of the National Academy. Born in New Jersey, John Wesley Paradise studied engraving with Asher B. Durand in New York City. He exhibited at the National Academy of which he was an associate member.
