Lot Essay
Based on ancient architectural forms from Greece and Rome, such as alter tables and pedestals, pier tables such as this example labeled by the master craftsman Charles Honore Lannuier represent the full manifestation of le gout antique in America. This "Antique Style" was in its nascent stages when Lannuier began working in New York, and this table represents a very early appearance of the precise outlines, rich graining and classically derived bronze mounts that characterize the style. This rare pier table was likely made in the first few years of Lannuier's time in New York, and bears two printed labels. Such occurrences of this new style in New York are rare before 1812, and the few extant examples are almost all by Lannuier. (see Kenny, Honore Lannuier, Cabinet Maker from Paris (New York, 1998) p. 69-75).
