Shorebird Decoys Caption: Setting out shorebird decoys, Great South Bay, Long Island, Circa 1890. "From the mid 19th century shorebirds were hunted for the market along the eastern seaboard from Massachusetts to North Carolina until laws were passed in 1918, restricting this practice. Collectively referred to as "snipe" every species of shorebrid decoy was produced to attract their wild counterparts to the hunter.
