Augustus Wilson (1864-1950) South Portland, Maine Caption: Augustus Aaron Wilson, 1864-1950 Caption: "Augustus Aaron 'Gus' Wilson, born in 1864 in Tremont, Maine a small coastal town on Mount Desert Island was a boat builder, outdorsman, sportsman and waterman. Wilson's carving career spanned some 50 years. During this period, it is estimated that he created thousands of hunting decoys and scores of decorative bird carvings in addition to tigers, snakes and other subjects. Wilson's decoy styles changed dramitically with time but his birds always exhibitied a variety of head positions, heads that rocked, open bills with and without carved fish or mussels, and bodies with wings raised at varying degrees. The best of his works that survived in good condition are few and far between. At the age of 50 he entered the lighthouse service from which he retired in 1934. With carved mussel in open mouth, an extremely rare form; also, with inlet head and slightly raised wing carving
Very old paint, most of which appears to be original; several checks run along back and narrow check runs through head and neck; moderately hit by shot on one side; nonetheless, very good condition overall
