Lot Essay

D.S. Howard, A Tale of Three Cities, illustrates a goblet of this form and notes that although "...the East India merchants hoped that they might make serious inroads into the glass market" they did not succeed. A similar (but restored) goblet from the Mottahedeh collection was sold Sotheby's New York, 19 October 2000, lot 147 and another from the Benjamin F Edwards III collection was sold Christie's New York, 22 Janury 2002, lot 114
