Boldly painted in the center with the arms of Ainsworth, the well richly enamelled with cell diaper interrupted by flower and insect panels, the rim showing the man in armor crest between Japanese style fans, cranes and pine, iron-red flowering boughs on the back

Lot Essay

Probably for Stephen Ainsworth, who married in 1718 Sarah, daughter of Nathaniel Higginson, Governor of Fort St. George. D.S. Howard, op. cit., p. 188 reports that in the collection of the Essex Institute, Salem, is a triple portrait of Ainsworth and his in-laws, Gov. and Mrs. Higginson, with Fort St. George in the background
