Lot Essay

It has been theorized that this model, overflowing with billing love birds and moulded with emblems of fidelity, was a gift shared between Obadiah and his wife Martha Sherratt.

See Halfpenny, p. 211, for two earthenware flat back figures groups modelled as either an embracing couple or as a pair of wrestling putti. These models directly related to the moulded figures applied to the sides of the present lot.
