A RARE EUROPEAN SUBJECT BOWL
Circa 1745-50
A shaped panel on each side enamelled with an amorous seated couple, her clothes in some disarray and their lips meeting in a kiss while she lifts his gold watch from his back pocket, all on a ground of cobalt blue peony vine, smaller famille rose bird and flower panels on the sides, the interior with blue scroll-and-shell border above blue landscape
10¼in. (26cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A very similar bowl is illustrated by Hervouet and Bruneau, op. cit., p. 177, where the authors wonder whether the woman is bored, or is timing the stolen moments with her lover. That bowl sold Sotheby's London, 11 June 1974, lot 176, and again Sotheby's Monaco, 22 June 1987, lot 1599, from the collection of Francois Hervouet
