Lot Essay

This painting depicts the Gipsy Moth IV as she rounds Cape Horn during Sir Francis Chichester's extraordinary solo circumnavition in 1967 at age 65. The Gipsy Moth, an auxiliary ketch named for Chichester's first airplane, was built by Camper & Nicholson and designed by Illingworth & Primrose. Her principal dimensions were 49.9 LOA, a beam of 7.10, and a draft of 7.75. She was specially customized for this circumnavigation for which Sir Francis Chichester was knighted.
