A Model of the colonial schooner Sultana
Anonymous (American, 20th century)
A well executed model built in plank on frame construction with yellow painted topsides, a black waist and a tan bottom. The deck of the model is also planked and stained a tan color. The model is fitted with a number of details which include: anchors, windlass, longboat with oars, deck gratings, water pump, six cannons rigged on carriages, tiller, flagstaff and other details. The model is well rigged with two masts, standing and running rigging, turning blocks, gaffs and boom, cross spars, bowsprit, foot ropes and other details. The model is mounted in a mahogany and glass display case.
31¼ x 11½ x 24¾ in. (79.3 x 29.3 x 62.8 cm.) cased dimensions.

Lot Essay

An excellent example of the small size of some seagoing traders in colonial times, the Sultana was built in 1766-67 by Benjamin Halowell of Boston, Massachusetts. This small schooner has some very interseting features of design, for example her small size, her sharp lines, and the fact that she was armed with swivels only.
