Affixed to the base of the interior of the case is a plaque that reads "On September 10, 1813 Master Commandant Oliver Hazzard Perry defeated the British Lakes squadron off Put-in-Bay. He immortalized the Battle of Lake Erie by transferring his flag, "Don't Give Up the Ship," from the battle-wrecked Lawrence to the Niagara to continue the fight until victory was won. Perry's victory, marked by the stirring message, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," was a great strategic victory for the Untied States, ensuring control of The Great Lakes and the then Northwest Territory."
