A Ship Model of the Ville de Bordeaux
Anonymous (French, ca. 1855)
This is a facinating antique model. The hull of which has been built up from the solid in mahogany and has bone inlaid gun port waists and inlaid bone port holes. The bottom of the model is covered in copper. The deck of the model is planked and fitted with numerous details, most of which are in bone. The details include: stem head (of ivory), whaleback with a bone railing, capstan, gattling guns, ladders, bilge pumps, deck gratings, anchors, cannons on carriages, ships's boats (mostly on davits), skylights, bridge tower, ventilators, boom crutch, transom gallery, rudder, etc. The model is fitted with three masts, bowsprit, dolphin stryker, cross spars with stun'sail booms, spanker boom and gaff. At the forepeak the model is inscribed "Valeur et Discipline" and below the break for the poop deck it is inscribed "Honneur et Patrie". The model is rigged with standing and running rigging which includes ratlines, forstays, halyards, bracing lines, topping lifts, hoisting lines and many other pieces of rigging. The model is mounted on a pair off turned copper pedestals and is displayed in a glass and mahogany display case.
