A Model of the Clipper Ship Sovereign Of The Seas

A detailed and well presented model of this famous clipper ship. The hull of the model is built up from the solid with black painted topsides and a copper foil bottom. The deck of the model is of mahogany and has been scored to replicate deck planking. The deck is fitted with numerous details including: anchors, cleats, bollards, bilge pumps, capstan, bell, ladders, pin & fife rails, forward deck house with two ship's boats lashed to the roof, water casks, barrels, cargo hatches, skylights, companionway, fire buckets, binnacle, ship's wheel and more. The ship is fitted with a bowsprit, three masts, cross spars, stun'sail booms, spanker boom and gaff, tops and trees. The model is rigged with standing and running rigging including ratlines, forestays, backstays, topping lifts, sheets, halyards, bracing lines, check chains, and other and other rigging details. The model is mounted on a pair of brass pedestals and is displayed in a glass case with brass trim and a mahogany base and stand.

Lot Essay

Built in 1852 and launched at the ship yard of Donald McKay, East Boston, MA, USA, for his own account. Built on speculation and sold to Andrew F. Meinke of the ship broker firm Funch & Meinke, New York. From 1852-1853 she was under the command of Captain Lauchlan McKay. In August of 1852 she sailed from New York for San Francisco. In October 1852 she was partly dismasted during a gale off Valparaiso. Under jury rig already the next day and completely re-rigged 12 days later. Arrived to San Francisco on 15 November 1852, 103 days out from New York. The best day's run was 368 miles. February 1853 she sailed from Honolulu to New York in 82 days with a cargo of 8000 barrels of whale oil. The best day's run was 374 miles on March 18 [Maury]. A later analysis of the logs showed that the distance sailed was 411 miles in 23 hours and 18 minutes or about 421 miles in 24 hours. In 1853 she was chartered to the Black Ball Line, Liverpool and was put under the command of Captain Henry Warner. On May 24, 1854 she was sold to Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn, Hamburg. She was the sold to Edward Bates & Theodore Eggers, Liverpool, for a price corresponding to $40,000 in June of 1858. On 6 August 1859 the Sovereign Of The Seas was wrecked on the Pyramid Shoal in the Straits of Malacca on voyage from Hamburg to China.
