Institutionalized after traumatic experiences that he suffered during World War II, Carlo Zinelli began making gouaches in 1957. Their subjects are repeated images of bulbous figures, birds and horses, rendered in flat, hieroglyphic-like silhouettes that generally cover both sides of the sheet.
