Lot Essay

This is one of a number of drawings depicting Old Testament prophets by Stradanus used by Galle for a series of twenty engravings published in 1613 (Baroni Vannucci, Jan van der Straet detto Giovanni Stradano, Rome, 1997, no. 708). K.G. Boon lists in the catalogue of The Netherlandish and German Drawings of the XVth and XVIth Centuries of the Frits Lugt Collection some of Stradanus drawings used by Galle (Paris, 1992, I, no. 201 and notes 7-24). Another version of Zechariah was sold at Sotheby's London, 10 December 1968, lot 49. The drawings for that series were executed in the 1590s, as is attested by two drawings dated to those years. A drawing of Isaiah was sold at Christie's Amsterdam, 11 November 1996, lot 17.
