This drawing was part of an album of sixteen sheets formerly in the Reitlinger collection in London. The style of the artist is distinctively Sienese and of the 1530s and has been named Pseudo-Pacchia because of his affinities with Girolamo della Pacchia, Beccafumi and Sodoma. Further drawings by this hand are in Chicago (S. Folds McCullagh and L.M. Giles, Italian Drawings before 1600 in the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, 1997, no. 260), in the British Museum, London (inv. 1885-3-14-300, 1954-11-26-2 and 1954-11-26-3) and exhibited in 1969 at the Merchant's Hall in Edinburgh (Italian 16th Century Drawings from British Private Collections, no. 81).
