Related to the head of Christ in Gandolfi's altarpiece of The Calling of Saint James and Saint John painted in 1757 for the parish church of Piumazzo, near Modena (P. Bagni, I Gandolfi, affreschi, dipinti, bozzetti, disegni, Bologna, 1992, no. 204). This picture is Gaetano's earliest documented work. A study of similar format for the head of Saint James is in a private collection in Bologna (P. Bagni, op. cit., no. 205).
