Peter Schatborn dates the drawing to the 1640s, and suggests that it is by a pupil of Rembrandt in a style close to that of Ferdinand Bol. He adds that even if the drawing is inspired by Rembrandt's work, it could not be a direct copy as contrary to the master's compositions of this subject Ishmael is represented as an adult and not a child.
We are grateful to Dr. Schatborn for his help in the preparation of this entry.
