In a letter to the previous owner Sylvie Brame confirmed that this work will be included in the supplement to K.E. Maison, Catalogue raisonné of the works by Honoré Daumier, now in preparation by the Comité Daumier.
Unsigned versions of the Violoniste chantant are in a German private collection and in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow (K.E. Maison, Honoré Daumier, Catalogue Raisonné of the paintings, watercolours and drawings, Paris, 1968, II, nos. 333-334.). The first drawing was exhibited in 1999 (M. Pantazzi, Daumier, exhib. cat., Ottawa, Musée des Beaux-Arts and elsewhere, 1999, no. 294), and its verso shows a composition of Le défenseur (K.E. Maison, op. cit., no. D656). Le défenseur is also known in another version in the Courtauld Gallery in London, signed in the same way as the present sheet.
The Violoniste chantant exhibited in Ottawa is dated by M. Pantazzi to 1865-1867. Margaret Stuffman relates the composition to a print of musicians published in Le monde illustré on 20 December 1862, and dates the drawing to the early 1860s (M. Stuffman, Honoré Daumier Zeichnungen, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art and others, 1992, no. 109).
