This head was used by Tischbein in reverse for his large engraving of Three studies of the head of a tiger, with two other related studies, part of his continuation of the publication of the Têtes des differents animaux (Andresen 126). Andresen dates the project to circa 1810, when Tischbein was in Eutin, while Anthony Griffiths and Frances Carey consider them to be unused prints from the first series, published in Naples in 1796 (A. Griffiths and F. Carey, German printmaking in the Age of Goethe, London, 1994, p. 134). See lot 132 in the present sale for another drawing from this group.
