Lot Essay

According to the entry in the catalogue raisonné, the present work was painted in the apartment at Werderstraße 42 in November 1932. The years leading up to the Second World War were a time during which Felixmüller produced a number of portraits. His interaction with wealthy sitters and especially Jewish patrons - in this instance Dr Erich Isakowitz, an established Dresden dentist - came to a halt with the rise to power of the National socialists (see A. Wadsley, 'From Weimar to Cold War - a biographical outline', in exh. cat. Between Politics and Studio - Conrad Felixmüller, Leicester, 1994, p. 22).
