A Chinese export lacquer sewing box
19th century
of oblong octagonal form, with sliding draw to the front, the interior with numerous compartments with fitted trays and some covers, containing carved ivory sewing accessories, all pulling out on one tray to reveal a lower level, the box decorated in black and gilt lacquer with scenes of figures in pavilion gardens and panels of flowers and foliage -- 14 1/8in. (36cms) long, accompanying letter dated 1841 from a father to his daughter, in which he promises to bring back 'a pretty workbox from China', sent by ship post with wax seal 'GB' (George Beadon).
