Lot Essay

Millet travelled with his wife to the Allier region in south-central France so that Catherine Millet might take a regimen of mineral water treatments at the famous spa's around Vichy. During the visits, Millet made numerous pencil drawings of the hilly farmlands near Vichy and tha rather desolate volcanic uplands around Puy-de-Dome. Drawing rapidly on-site, in small pocket notebooks, encouraged Millet's creation of a very personal vocabulary of marks and pencil strokes; and the distinctive landscape of rolling hillsides and precipitous drop-offs significantly expanded his repertoire of compositions.
