The present work was originally owned by Gellu Naum, the Romanian surrealist, poet and playwright. In pre-war Paris Naum was the central figure in an expatriate group from Bucharest and in 1935 he met Victor Brauner, who was to become his friend and mentor. A year later, he published his first book of poetry, Incendiary Traveler, with illustrations by Brauner. Eventually, more than 20 books of his poetry were illustrated by many of his Surrealist friends, including Jack Herold and Paul Paun.
