Lot Essay

Rowlandson owned a large collection of engravings after the Old Masters and the present drawing is based upon a work by Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530), which was part of the celebrated Orleans collection in Paris. The engraving was published in 1786. Another large sheet of studies after the Old Masters and also previously in the collection of Col. Gould Weston is now in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester. Rowlandson executed two further works after del Sarto, also previously in the Gould Weston Collection.
