Lot Essay

When this picture was acquired a fascinating early sketch of Yeames's most famous work, And when did you last see your father? was found on the reverse. Through the work of skilled conservators, the panel has been divided in two and the two pictures can now be enjoyed separately. The sketch is included in the present sale as lot 243.

Such charming scenes of domestic genre are rare in Yeames's oeuvre, although he was a versatile talent who turned his hand to most types of painting. The courtyard depicted is strongly reminiscent of those found in 17th century Dutch painting, in particular of those in the works of Pieter de Hooch.
