Zao Wou-Ki is a Frenchman of Chinese birth, and both these influences mark his paintings. 15.4.69 appears reminiscent of some post-war French artists, not least of all Jean Fautrier and Henri Michaux, while the blank spaces and calligraphic build-up of oils are evidence of his Chinese background. He has created a strange and stormy mindscape packed with gesture and action - like the strokes, the date title itself appears to record ephemerality itself.
