It was in Paris in 1958 that Christo made his first series of objects, called Inventory, in which he mixed wrapped, painted and unmodified articles. This variety of treatment was later reduced by the use of repeated identical objects or by the total wrapping of objects.
In Wrapped Can, one of the cans is believed to be a Campbell's soup can, while the black rectangular tin it sits on is believed to be an Earl Grey tea container. Christo made two wrapped cans in 1958, the present work and another now in the Rosenkranz Art Collection in Berlin. Mr. Rosenkranz is a personal friend of Christo and has collected many of his pieces over the past 45 years. Wrapped Can was presented as a gift by Christo to Ms. Edith Sommer, wife of Mr. Rosenkranz at the time (1959).
