Lot Essay

This drawing, pre-dating a model of the same subject, was built for a large-scale architectural sculpture proposed for the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. It was meant to be 20 meters long and embody the grandeur of a stadium with its monumental stair structure. "The space underneath its sloping, stepped sides was to be illuminated with yellow light. According to Nauman, the proposal was rejected for safety reasons; it was thought that the bleacherlike steps would be too inviting for climbing." (In: J. Simon (ed.) Bruce Nauman, exh. cat. Walker Art Center, Minneapolis 1994, p. 290.)
