Lot Essay

This composition is taken from one of the most popular viewpoints of the Piazzetta; from the Riva degli Schiavoni at about one-third of the length of the Doge's Palace shown on the right. Opposite it is the column of Saint Mark's surmounted by the lion of Saint Mark; farther away is the granite column of Saint Theodore with the statue of the Saint, the first patron saint of Venice. Both the columns were brought from the East almost one thousand years ago along with a third one which, it is said, was lost when they were being unloaded. The Libreria di San Marco in the center of the composition was begun by Sansovino in 1536; at its left is the Church of Santa Maria della Salute and in the distance on the extreme left is Palladio's Church of the Redentore on the island of the Giudecca.
