Following the successful and influential Futurist exhibition at the Galerie Der Sturm (Herwarth Walden) in 1912 in Berlin, Wauer returned to painting and from then on worked closely with Walden, exhibited and published with him. Prior to that he had studied at the academies of Dresden, Berlin and Munich and worked in publishing as well as in theater, both, as a critic and as a director for Max Reinhardt in Berlin.

Wauer was inspired by Marc's statement: '... our modern life and thought is so entirely futuristic, from telephone to x-rays...' (quoted in E. Franz (ed.), Franz Marc. Kräfte der Natur. Werke 1912-1915, Ostfildern 1993, p. 180).

Kämpfende Formen and Wirbelnde Kräfte were painted as an expression of the time and place the artists lived in. Not only were these paintigs executed in a time of revolutionizing modernity but one of them at the beginning and the other towards the end of the war. The appropriate method for both artists seemed abstraction; shapes, colours and movement in conflict. A year after executing his fantastically dynamic Wirbelnde Kräfte, William Wauer joined the radically avant-garde Novembergruppe.
