Lot Essay
In 1883, as his financial position showed signs of improving from the doldrums of Vétheuil, Monet took on the tenancy of a substantial property known as 'Le Pressoir' at Giverny. Seven years later, when the estate came up for sale, Monet bought it and it remained his home until his death in 1926. In the mid-1880s Giverny, nestling on the right bank of the Seine, was a small village of some 280 inhabitants and Monet quickly declared himself 'enchanted by the place'. The present work, executed in 1885, shows Giverny viewed from the opposite bank of the Seine, with the tower at the left of village being the old mill at Chennevières and the pathway at the right climbing the hill towards Bois-Jérôme.
