Lot Essay

This scene appears to be after Alexandre Calame (1810-1864). Probably the most influential and popular Swiss landscape painter of the Nineteenth Century, he was a pupil in Geneva of Francois Diday (1802-77). His many paintings of the mountains of Switzerland were based on drawings and studies done from nature during summer sketching expeditions.
