Lot Essay

Ada Countess of Lovelace was the only legitimate daughter of Lord Byron. Raised amongst prominent London society she met the reknowned scientist Charles Babbage who was credited with the invention of the first computer. Unusually for a lady of her time, following her marriage to Lord King, first Earl of Lovelace, Ada continued her scientific studies and interests and called herself 'The bride of Science'. Various portraits of Ada Lovelace exist today due to her notoriety as Byron's daughter which was a constant source of nineteenth century gossip. Amongst other collections, the Science Museum holds one such portrait and the British Museum another.
