Lot Essay

The present work is the original watercolor for which the engraving of Inscription Rock at Esopus Landing by J.C. McRae was used in H.R. Schoolcraft's book of 1857. Inscription Rock is located on the western bank of the Hudson River, at Esopus Landing. The present watercolor depicts the landscape of the eastern shores of the Hudson, as seen from the primitive indian inscriptions found on Inscription Rock in the 1850s.
