The George IV Palace of Westminster table has a galleried and hinge-fronted top supported on robust reeded and columnar legs that are fitted with castors. It epitomises the elegant and practical library furniture designed in the mid-1820s for the House of Lords by Sir John Soane (d. 1837), Architect Attached to the Office of Works and author of 'Designs in Architecture', 1778, which included furniture patterns.
