These 'Fauteuil' library-chairs have robust Grecian-scrolled and reeded arms relating to those of a settee in the Royal Collection. The latter, in turn, relates to hall seats provided in 1802 under the direction of the architect Henry Holland for George, Prince of Wales's Marine Pavilion, Brighton and attributed to the Mount Street firm of Messrs. Marsh and Tatham (E. T. Joy, English Furniture, 1800-1851, London, 1977, p. 40).
