The Roman tripod of addorsed sphynx is conceived in the manner of the celebrated antiquity known as Petrarch's inkstand. A related vase tripod, incorporated in an early 17th century Italian andiron and attributed to Niccolo Roccatagliata, is illustrated as a candelabrum in R. and J. Adam's, Works in Architecture, II, London, 1779, pl. VIII.
