Lot Essay

The heart-shaped 'cabriolet' back relates to a set of sixteen chairs supplied to Richard Myddelton (d. 1795) along with two sofas, for the Saloon at Chirk Castle, Wrexham, North Wales, circa 1782-1783, attributed to the Golden Square cabinet-makers Mayhew and Ince (C. Hussey, 'Chirk Castle, Denbighshire - IV', Country Life, 12 October 1951, p. 1149, fig. 4 and The Dictonary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 596). The cabriole arm-support and fluted leg headed by a curved patera are also features which the present chairs share with the Chirk Castle suite. A related set of chairs with similar seat rail moulding is at Culzean Castle, Ayrshire and a single chair of the same model was offered anonymously, in these Rooms, 25 June 1987, lot 23.
Four pairs of chairs attributed to Mayhew and Ince and possibly supplied to James Buller (b. 1740) for Downes, Devon, were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 12 November 1998, lots 84-87.
