Lot Essay

A drawing-room centre-table, supported by embowed dolphins evoking the history of the poet Arion, featured in Rudolph Ackermann's The Repository of Arts, May, 1825. A pair to the present table, although lacking a stepped plinth, was formerly in the collection of David Style, Esq., sold Christie's house sale, Wateringbury Place, Maidstone, Kent, 31 May, 1978, lot 214 (£2,100).
This table is illustrated in an article in The Antique Collector where it is shown in situ in the Second Drawing Room of the Livery Hall of The Worshipful Company of Grocers, which was refurbished around 1950. The author of this article on the Grocers' Hall in 1964, noted this table as being 'calculated to arouse covetousness among any visiting members of the Fishmongers' Company'.
