A Dutch silver breadbasket

Silversmiths in Amsterdam, the undisputed centre of Dutch Neo-classicism, had since the turn of the century been following French fashion quite closely. The present basket was made by Andreas Schiotling, son of Johannes Schiotling and Margaretha Sophia Janssen. Johannes Schiotling started as a silversmith in 1762 and developed into one of the most noble and versatile silversmiths of his day, comparable only with his contemporaries Sondag in Rotterdam and Simons in The Hague. Andreas entered the guild in 1792 and took over the business after his fathers death in 1799.
