Mark of Johan Georg Meijer, Amsterdam, 1863
The shaped oblong stand on four button feet, the border engraved with scrolling foliage, reeded rim, engraved 1813-1863, two circular holders with each a three scroll handle, two cut-glass baluster silver-gilt mounted bottles, with detachable circular cover engraved with scrolling foliage, one for ink and one for sand, marked on stand and mounts

The present ink-well was originally from a series of twenty-one ink-wells given by Mr and Mrs Backer-Bierens to their cousins to celebrate their golden wedding-anniversary (1813-1863).
