The present candlesticks bear the Clifford coat-of-arms. By decision of the British College of Arms, dated 29 December 1740 and signed by John Anstis Esq. Principal King of Arms, George Clifford (1685 -1760) was granted to bear the following coat-of-arms: "Cheque Or and Azure on a Fess Gules a Crescent between two Estoiles Argent, and for the Crest on a Wreath of the Colours A Wivern Gules Collor d'Or, on the Collar a Cresent between two Estoiles Sable, to be used and born hereafter by the said George Clifford Merchant, and the Descendants of his Body [...] with their due and proper Distinctions, according to the Laws of Arms" (A.A. Bouvy and H.J.F. Oetgens van Waveren Pancras Clifford, op. cit., p. 86).
In 1960 the Rijksmuseum acquired quite a large collection of silver engraved with the Clifford coat-of-arms from the bequest of jkvr. A.C.A.J. Clifford. She was a lineal descendant of George Clifford. This collection comprises numerous larger pieces of silver, such as dishes, candlesticks, salvers etc., and flatware. Depending on the available space the objects are engraved with the complete coat-of-arms, the coat-of-arms without supporters and crest, or the crest only. The majority of these objects was made in or shortly before 1806. Supposedly they were acquired on the occasion of the wedding in that year of George Clifford (1769-1847), great-grandson of the above mentioned George Clifford, and Carolina Justina van Weede (1779-1837). The Clifford bequest also comprises a pair candlesticks of fairly similar type made by Anton Hinrich Pape in 1805. They are engraved with the Clifford coat-of-arms without supporters and crest (J.R. de Lorm, op. cit.., p. 232, no. 157, illustrated).
