Antoni Magnus was born on 29 December 1605 in the town of Deventer. He was the son of Pouwel Magnus and Agnete, daughter of goldsmith Gerrit Swelinck. Antoni's maker's mark was found on a Deventer mark plate of 1630.
Two beakers with the maker's mark of Antoni Magnus have survived. The present beaker and another which is in the possession of the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk in Voorst. The engravings on both beakers are finely executed. It is not known whether Magnus was responsible for the engravings himself.
The larger figures are based on prints by A. Bosse: Lettre Amoureuse du Capitaine Extravagant à sa Maitresse (Duplessis 1402); Reponse de la Damoiselle à la lettre du Capitaine Extravagant (Duplessis 1403); Le Capitaine Fracasse (Duplessis 1409); the small grotesque figures based on prints by J. Callot (Meaume 752, 753, 756, 761, 765, 766; Lieure 411, 412, 417, 420, 424)
The first exhibition in which this magnificent beaker was included was the prestigeous Geschiedkundige-Overijsselsche tentoonstelling, held in the former provinciehuis in Zwolle and opened on the 18th of August in 1882. This event resulted in the foundation of the present Stedelijk Museum in Zwolle.
Christie's is indebted to mrs. Lydie van Dijk from the Stedelijk Museum in Zwolle for her information on the first known owner/exhibition of this beaker.
