The winged figure could feasibly represent Victory (or Nike), bearing a laurel wreath. She was the messenger of the gods, an angel, who descended to crown the victor, not only after battle but also athletics and poetry. In contrast, blindfolding is regarded as a symbol of moral or spiritual blindness or sin. Personifications of Fortune and Nemesis are often represented blindfolded, to signify their randomness.
