CARDANO, Girolamo (1501-1576). De rerum varietate libri XVII. Basel: Henricus Petri, 1557.
2 works in one volume, 2o (218 x 203 mm). Woodcut portrait of the author on title, volvelle plate for leaf O1 tipped in, numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in text (light darkening to a few leaves at beginning). Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards (worn, lower hinge cracked, with wooden board and spine detached). Provenance: Early ink marginalia; Henderson (presentation inscription dated 1845 on title).
FIRST EDITION. A continuation of Cardano's De subtilitate (1550). "The two works, written in an elliptical and often obscure Latin, contain a little of everything: from cosmology to the construction of machines; from the usefulness of natural sciences to the evil influence of demons; from the laws of mechanics to cryptology" (DSB). 2o. Title within woodcut scrollwork border in four parts, portrait of the author on verso, numerous woodcuts of plants and animals in text, woodcut headpieces and initials, some historiated. (Some light browning, last leaves loose, some dampstaining at end.)
FIRST EDITION, earliest issue (title dated 1588). In Phytognomonica, Porta develops the doctrine known as signatures, in which the external form of a plant indicates its medicinal properties. This copy with the additional signatures A-C3 (lacks blank C4) at end containing the index which is found in some copies (see Mortimer 399).
