PORTA, Giovanni Battista della. De refractione optices parte... Naples: H. Salvianus for J. J. Carlinus & A. Pace, 1593.
4o (199 x 148 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title, numerous woodcut diagrams in text (some light marginal browing). 17th-century limp vellum (minor wear to spine ends and edges). Provenance: H. Cavendish (ink stamp on verso of title); John Grace Freeman (ownership inscription on front paste-down).
FIRST EDITION. The dedication and the conjugate blank were inserted behind the title after the book was made up. Porta claimed to be the inventor of the telescope (De refractione optices) although he does not appear to have constructed one before Galileo. Adams P-1929.
