Lot Essay

The bridge is likely to be the same as that near Heemstede and Haarlem, known from the drawings by Molyn. In particular, there is one signed and dated 1655, formerly in the Lugt collection, that shares clear compositional similarities with the present painting (Fondation Custodia, Paris, ; see H.-U. Beck, Pieter Molyn, Katalog der Handzeichnungen, Doornspijk, 1998, p. 146, no. 292, illustrated p. 147). Another, also formerly in the collection of Frits Lugt, Maartensdijk is in a private collection, Germany (ibid., pp. 152-3, no. 306, illustrated).
